The Story Behind MedConcerns

Hilary spent her career working with patients recovering from stroke and brain injury, often acting as an interpreter for people with aphasia who couldn’t express urgent needs. Seeing this breakdown repeatedly inspired her to create a tool that would help patients speak for themselves. Steve, a hospitalist since 2006, witnessed the same challenges and experienced them personally when his father developed aphasia.
Together, they combined their clinical and medical experience to create MedConcerns — a tool designed to help patients communicate clearly and participate more fully in their care. Their shared goal: ensure every patient is heard and every provider has the support to understand them.
